Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics (ZUA for short) is a full-time university of regular higher education; it was originally affiliated to Aeronautical Industry Company of China. Its predecessor was Financial and Economical School founded in Pingyuan Province in 1949. ZUA was accredited to award bachelor degrees in 1989; and in the year of 2013, the university obtained the qualification of awarding master degrees. Today it has been developed into an institution of regular higher education with the discipline of management remaining dominant, involving a wide range of disciplines such as engineering, economics, law, science and literature, etc. It now services as an important cradle of cultivating compound applied talents for the development of local economy and aeronautical industry of China.
1. Offices & Programs
At present, the university has formed a multi-discipline and multi-level school running pattern focusing on full-time undergraduate education and joint cultivation of postgraduates. It consists of twenty departments, schools, namely, School of Accounting, School of Business Administration, School of Resources & Economic Trade, School of Information Science, School of Management Science & Engineering, School of Mechatronic Engineering, Foreign Language Department, Law Department, School of Construction Engineering Management, Computer Science and Application Department, Department of Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences Department, Department of Electronic Communication Engineering, Department of Art Design, Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Department of Physical Education, International College, Software Technology Vocational College, Statistics Vocational College, and School of Continuing Education.
The university offers 66 undergraduate courses well distributed across the following seven subjects: management, economics, engineering, law, science, arts and literature, among which the courses of Industrial Engineering, Auditing and Accounting are the government supervised specialties; Archival Science, Construction Management, Human Resource Management, Auditing, Marketing and Statistics are the Province supervised specialties, Accounting, Management Science and Engineering, Information Science are the key courses in the Province. At present, about 28,000 full time students study on different courses in the university. The university puts emphasis on the quality of teaching, adheres to the guiding principle of “improving quality control and teaching, optimizing the structure of teaching staff, enhancing the students’ practical ability and giving full play to the advantages of the university”, and takes the cultivation of qualified talents for the local economic development and aeronautical industry as its major task.
With professors and associate professors as its backbone, ZUA has a teaching staff of excellent quality and rich experience. The total staff number is over 2000, with over 900 full-time teaching staff, among which about 400 are professors and associate professors, 840 have doctor’s degree and master’s degree. Among all the teaching staff, 1 was selected for the national talent project, 11 of them enjoy the Special government allowances of the State Council, 5 are national outstanding teachers, 89 are Academic technology leaders and core teachers of Henan province.
In recent years, the university has scored remarkable achievements in scientific research and its research capacity has been increasingly strengthened. 52 projects have been sponsored by the National Natural Sciences Foundation (NSFC), 12 NSFC-based projects have been carried out through international cooperation and 21 projects have been supported by the National Social Sciences Foundation of China. As of 2009, altogether 823 scientific research projects have been carried out by the university.
To upgrade the scientific research, The university has set up 35 research centers such as Henan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center of Aviation Economic Development, Industrial Engineering Research Center, Accounting and Finance Research Center, CAD/CAM Research Center, Quality Engineering Research Center, Civil Engineering and Management Technology Research Center, etc. Professor John Kasarda of the University of North Carolina is employed as the chief scientist of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Aviation Economic Development.
4. Academic Exchange
The university has established intercollegiate exchange relations with many universities abroad such as in the USA, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, France, Australia, and South Korea. Meanwhile, it has strengthened international cooperation and communication by carrying out extensive academic exchange and research cooperation. Since 1984, ZUA has begun invited foreign experts and teachers to give lectures or conduct academic exchanges, while receiving over-seas students from South Korea and other countries. Since 1982, the university has sent its teachers to countries like USA, UK, France, Canada, Japan, Germany and Australia for further study and visit. Today, teachers studying abroad have returned to the university and make contributions to cultural and educational exchanges with oversea universities.
In April, 2013, ZUA set up the Confucius Institute in Tanzania. It is the third Confucius Institute built up by a university of Henan province and the first Institute in Tanzania, which also demonstrates the new stage and new era of international cooperation and exchange of ZUA.
5. Campus Life and Our Students
The university has always been trying to create a sound environment for its students by providing colorful campus life. To this end, various students’ societies such as the English Club of College Students, Literature Society and Film Arts Society have been set up on the campus and various activities have been carried out such as the Arts Festival of ZUA and the Project of Protecting Yellow River etc.
Students from ZUA have made brilliant achievements in various competitions, like the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, National English Contest for College Students and the National University Students "Challenge Cup".
Since its founding, the university has always been implemented the teaching principle featuring a combination of management and engineering and putting equal emphasis on science and arts. As a result, it has nurtured a batch of high quality managerial talents for both the aeronautical industry and the province. Many graduates have become the backbone and even leaders of their working units. Despite the fierce competition, the employment rate of graduates has stood at 95% for years, ranking the first among the institutions of higher education in Henan province.
